Where 5G focused on enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low-latency communications, and massive machine-type communications, 6G aims to integrate sensing, communication, and computing into a unified fabric. Key capabilities being researched include terahertz-band communications (offering speeds up to 100 times faster than 5G), sub-millimeter positioning accuracy, and the ability to simultaneously sense the environment while communicating.
“6G will blur the line between the physical and digital worlds,” explains Dr. Ibrahim Suleiman, a telecommunications researcher at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. “Imagine networks that can detect objects and people through walls, provide holographic communication experiences, and support distributed AI processing across millions of connected devices. That’s the vision for 6G.”
For developing markets like Nigeria, the leapfrog opportunity is significant. Just as many African countries skipped landline infrastructure and moved directly to mobile, 6G could enable applications — from ubiquitous telemedicine to autonomous agriculture — that bypass multiple generations of infrastructure investment.
Timeline and Challenges
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is expected to finalize 6G requirements by 2027, with initial commercial deployments in leading markets around 2030. Significant technical challenges remain, including developing cost-effective terahertz transceivers, managing the energy consumption of dense base station deployments, and establishing global spectrum allocation. For Nigerian businesses and policymakers, the time to start engaging with 6G research and standardization is now — ensuring that African perspectives and needs are represented as this transformative technology takes shape.
