Nigeria's government has attributed significant financial benefits to two major economic policy changes implemented since mid-2023: the elimination of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira currency. According to the Finance Ministry, these reforms have generated approximately N15.8 trillion in savings for the federal budget through December 2025.

The government highlighted multiple areas where these savings are being channeled, including wage enhancement programs, capital investment in infrastructure projects, and the establishment of NELFUND, a student loan initiative. Additional benefits have been directed toward social safety net programs designed to cushion vulnerable populations against inflationary pressures.

Officials have framed the reforms as necessary structural adjustments to stabilize Nigeria's economy and reduce long-term fiscal strain. The fuel subsidy removal eliminated government expenditures on petroleum price controls, while currency liberalization allowed market forces to determine the naira's value against foreign currencies.

These policy shifts remain contentious domestically, with supporters citing macroeconomic gains while critics point to resulting increases in living costs and inflationary pressures affecting ordinary citizens.
