The Trump administration has been conducting investigations into progressive and mainstream organizations involved in protests against the government's deportation enforcement actions, according to newly disclosed government documents.

The scrutiny comes amid broader concerns about the administration's approach to domestic political opposition. The investigations focused on groups that organized demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

The development has drawn comparisons to historical federal surveillance programs. From the 1950s through the 1970s, the FBI conducted extensive operations against leftist organizations, including infiltration and disinformation campaigns designed to undermine their credibility and effectiveness.

The timing of the current investigations has raised additional questions. The administration previously blocked a federal criminal inquiry into an incident in which an ICE agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis last January. The woman had been protesting ICE operations at the time of the shooting.

Civil liberties advocates have expressed concern that the pattern of investigating protest groups represents a troubling precedent for government monitoring of domestic political activity.
